Things To Do and See in Corfu
Corfu Town
Corfu Town is a very tasteful and captivating city which is considered to be a 'gem' for sightseeing due to its numerous monuments from the Medival times, such as the Old and New Fortress, Liston Promenade and the well-known Church of Saint Spryidon - better known as the Patron Saint of Corfu therefore considered as the protector of the island. For shoppers there are several stores selling everything from cheap trinkets and souvenirs to expensive designer goods, leather products and hand crafted jewellery. Many boutiques line the small cobbled streets selling all the latest fashions, as well as shoes and accessories. If your preference is sightseeing you will find plenty to keep you interested.
Achilleion
The pretty Achilleion Palace is located South of the island in the picturesque village of Gastouri and was believed to have been constructed for the Empress Elizabeth of Austria back in 1890. The garden grounds of this magnificent palace enjoys breath-taking views of the capital of Corfu and there are numerous historic statues still intact, many of which were inspired by Ancient Greek mythology. The most impressive statue is of the Greek warrior Achilles. During World War One the palace was used as a military hospital and a few years later it was also housed an orphanage. After the second World War, during which it was used as military headquarters, it was used for functions such as political meetings and then for some years it was turned into a casino. Today it is remains a popular landmark for tourists not only for the history behind the building but the fact it was also used as a film location for the famous James Bond movie "For Your Eyes Only".
Mon Repos
Formerly used as a residence by the Greek royal family during the summer months, Mon Repos is most known as the birthplace of the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip in 1921. Further to Prince Philips birth came along numerous other influential people such as Princess Alexia and Princess Sophie of Greece before King Constantine fled the country into exile in 1967. Mon Repos is situated within a short distance of Corfu Town and today opens its gates for tourists to explore the grounds if they wish.
Monastery of Paleokastritsa
Paleokastritsa is well known for being one of the most pretty areas of the island. Located on the northwestern side of Corfu sits the gigantic Monastery complex dedicated to The Virgin Mary otherwise known as 'Panagia' of Paleokastritsa. The monastery dates back to the 13th century and enjoys magnificent views overlooks the famous beach of Paleokastrista and dominates the whole village. As well as the monastery which there is a small museum home to numerous religious items from the Byzantine times and a small gift shop to purchase unique holiday souvenirs.
Kanoni and Mouse Island
Kanoni and Mouse Island is most certainly one of the most photographed, iconic sights of Corfu Island. Kanoni is a small hilly area a short distance from Corfu Town and is known for its high-end, luxury hotels, gorgeous views of Mouse Island and the church of Panagia Vlacherna which is located on a tiny island connected to the main island via a narrow walkway. The church was constructed back in the 17th century and features impressive wooden-carved iconostasis and pretty frescoes inside. The roof is made of red tiles and above the entrance sits a tall bell tower.
Old Perithia
The Old Village of Perithia is a 'ghost village' situated high up in the gorgeous mountains countryside in the northeastern side of the island, approximately 8 km from Kassiopi. The village was originally established back in the 14th century during the Byzantine times. Old Perithia is a perfect example of a traditional mountain village full of old brick houses, narrow cobbled pathways, ruins of churches and residential houses and a handful of traditional tavernas which still operate today. Visiting the village really gives one a glimpse of how the way of life was back in the days before tourism reached the island. Located just below Mount Pantokrator - the highest point in the island, this small village consists of approximately 120 houses, most of which are now ruins. Today - some of the houses are in the process of being resorted and a few of them have even been transformed into a small Boutique Hotel.
Vidos Island
This minuet islet located directly across the narrow channel from Corfu Town is a protected nature reserve, yet back in Ancient times this island was used as a prison for criminals which was later destroyed by the British. Today Vidos is a very popular landmark with tourists - there are a couple of small beaches on the northern side of the island all of which are within walking distance and there is one taverna on the island serving delicious meals while enjoying an unbeatable view across to the old town of Corfu. Boat taxis leave regularly, almost every half an hour making Vidos extremely easy to reach.
Canal DAmour
On the North East Coast of Corfu island, near to the well-known resort of Sidari, sits one of Corfu's natural wonders, Canal D'Amour which means The Channel of Love. The Canal D'Amour is a very unqiue landscape for the Mediteriannian and consists of rocks made of clay and due to the natural, corrosive effects of the sea and storng winds, has carved out unsual rock formations and numerous caves and coves, ideal for swimming. The legend has it that if a couple swims throug the channel of love together they will get married and spend the rest of their lives together!

Kassiopi
Formerly a small, quiet fishing village which lies 35 km north of Corfu Town has now transformed into a cosmopolitan resort which offers something for every type of traveler. There are numerous beaches and small, secluded coves to discover all of which are in a short walk from the harbor. The harbor is the main central location of the village during the summer months. Daily excursions leaving from the harbor as well as several cafes, bars, shops, restaurants and traditional tavernas can also be found in and around the harbor - making it the ideal place to sit back and watch the world go by. There is also the remains of the Kassiopi Castle and the Church both of which are a must see! This gorgeous village truly offers the perfect balance both for those wishing for a quiet, traditional atmosphere and those seeking buzzy nights with music!
Avlaki
Avlaki beach is one of the most favoritism beaches of the north coast of Corfu. Located between Kassiopi and Agios Stephanos this gorgeous, unspoiled beach enjoys two tavernas serving exquisite dishes and daily fresh fish, water-sports such as sailing and canoeing as well as boat hire. The beach is a very long stretch of soft white pebbles and crystal clear waters. Sun beds and umbrellas are available for a small fee. Parking facilities are provided at either end of the beach. A visit to Avlaki beach is one which will not disappoint!
Agios Stefanos
Agios Stephanos is a small village located on the North East Coast of Corfu Island. The picturesque village enjoys a relaxing, traditional atmosphere and a wonderful range of tavernas and bars which sit side by side along the pretty harbor front as well as a few gift shops and two mini markets. Motor boat here is available in the harbor which gives peoples the freedom to reach secluded bays and hidden caves which cannot be reached by foot.
Kalami/Kouloura
Kalami has recently become well-known resort due to its association with the Durrell Family - some of whom once occupied the iconic White House. Today, the White House has been transformed into a exquisite taverna which enjoys breath-taking views across the bay and to Albania. This small yet upmarket resort offers a range of bars, restaurants, cafes, tavernas and gift shops. Water sports and motor boat hire is available on the beach of Kalami. Within a short walk, Kalami's neighbor village, Kouloura, is a pretty horse-shaped bay which features one quiet seafood taverna right by the waters edge serving daily caught fresh fish. Nissaki
Located on the northeastern coast of Corfu between the sparkling blue waters of the Mediterranean and the dramatic backdrop of the slopes of Mount Pandokrator sits the small hamlet of Nissaki. There are numerous walks and hiking trails in the local area, motor boat hire is also available for those wishing to explore the secluded beaches and coves which cannot be reached by foot. A variety of seafront tavernas, cafes, bars and shops can be found in Nissaki and other nearby resorts offer nightlife, one of them being Kassiopi, which is approximately a 20 minuet drive away. Sidari
On the North West cost of Corfu lays a highly popular resort better known as Sidari better known for its long sandy beaches, water sports and buzzy nightlife! Gouvia
Gouvia, on the east coast of the island is in close proximity to the main town and the airport, approximately 9km.& Once a small fishing village and built on the site of an ancient Venetian harbor it now hosts the main marina on the island where many yachts and smart boats moor during the summer season and from where visitors can try their hand at sailing activities. Several sandy, shingle and pebbly beaches are located in the area with water-sports and fun activities all catering for the many visitors that arrive during the season. Kontokali

Kommeno
